My Mother

My mother awakes
before the sun awakes
her eyes are half closed
by the late work caused
yet she does the same
for years as a child's game.
But complaints not
for she is similar to a dot
as a grass under the pines
but in my heart she shines
as a star in the dark night
yet she continues her fight
till the moment she sleeps
long after the sun sleeps.

Hold my Hands and Break the Walls

If the urge is
exactly from your heart
and honest is your love,
let me not bid farewell
to your beautiful smile.
For I know not
who else does give
a better smile than yours.
But assure
in the name of thy lord
your smile
is not born from the lips
but from the heart.
And tell me you've no caste,
no religion, no colour
nor status too
for love is a little boy
makes friends innocently
with whom his father rebels
and often forgets
social barriers around him.

But let me break all the walls
and reduce the gaps forever
for the love-river flows
restlessly to the sea beside.
Come, let us hold our hands
for a better tomorrow
where there are no Christians,
no Hindus, no Whites, no Blacks
neither rich, nor poor too
but only 'man and woman'
who lives and loves each other.

Mr. White and Me

Hello Mr. White,
Let me count the bricks
on the wall that stands
in between us:
One: a brick of religion
Two: a brick of caste
Three: a brick of class
Four: a brick of status
Five: a brick of food
Six: a brick of language
Seven: a brick of race...
Yes ! you're White!

Now Mr. White,
Let me count the branches
on the same tree that link
us each other:
One: a branch of blood
Two: a branch of emotion
Three: a branch of tear
Four: a branch of hunger
Five: a branch of death...
Yes ! we're Human!

OK. Mr. White,
Let me count the golden steps
I passed in the ladder that keeps
me in a better position than you:
One: a step of innocence
Two: a step of justice
Three: a step of truth
Four: a step of virtue
Five: a step of love
Six: a step of kindness...
Above all I am an Indian!

Hero!

Years ago , I was enjoying my school days on the banks of Bharata River where the Government Higher Secondary School Kuttippuram situated. I used to sit beside the window and enjoyed each and every moment outside the walls. My eyes roved all the ways and brought all interesting stories outside though they did not have any particular authors. The days passed over just as the water in the river and the school closed after the second terminal examination.
When the school re-opened I found the teachers with a bundle of answer papers in their hands .
'' I could not sleep all these days , you know Basheer''
'' Why ? Won't you get the pass mark?"
'' Who will be the toppest , Aswathy or Amrita?"

These were the questions that we discussed when our physics sir came to the class . But I kept silence through out the class and stared at his hands . He took each paper and called the names one by one. Silence dominated all around and I seldom took breath until the moment my name was called.
''Basheer...Basheer...Basheer...what the hell have you been doing there?"
He called me thrice and I jumped from my seat and stood shocked for a moment. I stood bowed in front of him while he was checking my answer sheets once again. Silence...pin-drop silence...
'' Will you get Thirty Five out of Eighty ?" , He asked

I said nothing as if my tongue was tied. I was dead sure that I wouldn't get Thirty Five because the exam was rather difficult and my answers wouldn't be sufficient to get such a mark.
'' Will you get Thirty? '' , he once again broke the silence. But I stood in the same manner without giving any answer. He was so irritated that the third question came to me like a bullet.
'' Idiot , will you get at least Twenty five? the minimum mark! ".
A shudder surrounded me when I saw his left hand moved towards the sticks. Actually he was compelling me to say yes though I hadn't any confidence to say so. My memories led me to the examination hall and the questions I answered with the help of my friends.
'Why doesn't he go down to Fifteen' , I thought until he jumped over me as a leopard
'' You Buffoon, will you get at least TWENTY ? "
''Yes'' I nodded my head without any interest on my face and waited for the proceedings. To my surprise , he began to laugh , he laughed and laughed and fell down on the table . Holding my answer sheets on his left hand he came forward and turned the paper slowly towards the crowd. Hardly after a second, the  entire class laughed aloud and I stood as a stone in the midst of them without understanding anything. I was so hurted, insulted and above all isolated even in the midst of the losers. But the crowd suddenly stopped laughing when they saw a drop of tear slowly fell down from my eyes which carried all the pains, sufferings of that moment.
'' Can anyone tolerate that much insult in a class room! ?''
            '' Am I that much stupid! ? ''
'' Is it right to call the student 'Buffoon' who got through the S.S.L.C examination in the first class! ?''
'' Is it fair to call the student 'Idiot' who got all the papers in the first year! ?''
Injustice! A clear evidence of injustice! Without speaking any word, the teacher turned the paper slowly towards my face as he wanted to justify his deeds. I saw my physics paper with my naked eyes , I felt as if the sky had fallen on me. What a sight! How incredible! I found Eighty below the line and a big zero above the line! First time in my life , first time in my home ! Father ! My father! How!
''Is that Twenty? '', the teacher asked and indulged again in laughing.
'How do I present a zero in front of him! I thought about my father , seeing his face through that big zero. I felt nothing when the stick fell on my pants but stood as a role model to all the losers who prefer to introduce my score to their score in front of their parents.
But days again fell down as the leaves of a huge tree and I passed in the public exam in the second class.
''Unbelievable'' , the physics teacher said when he came to know the news.
'' No , he kept his word'' , the English teacher said , ''Seventy Eight on English in Plus Two is a new record in Kuttippuram !"
Now it is the readers turn to decide whether I am a zero or a hero!

Nucleus

A tear-drop from the right
awakes silently in despair
weeps without disturbing
the sleeping tongue.

It disturbs not the cheek
nor the nose but clings
on the half closed lid
weeps alone in the darkness.

From the left another awakes
in half sleep but stops
on lips and spreads its hands
widely to console the former.

Both share their pains in silence
and weep the whole night
but know not the painful sigh
from the sleepless heart.

When the heart falls asleep
all his friends rest in peace
but the heart seldom sleep
often makes others sleepless.

Forlorn

Darkness swallows the earth , I know
night slowly spreads around the hill
only when I hear the call of sparrow
and on the table when I see the sleeping pill.

Oh gifted sleep! come as a gentle woman
and take me into your beautiful heaven
Oh sweet memories! here lies your man
come let's fall in love in the hour of eleven.

Or let me to the hell of disturbing thoughts
it flows and flows as a river in june
but never knows the ways it wroughts
but flows until the sea it reaches soon.

My mind roars aloud like a turbulent sea
for her thoughts come and go like waves
that disturb me even if I'm on the quay
yet I find no place to escape but graves.

But still her face emerges from the heart
as the moon comes out from the cloud
what harm I done? nothing from my part
but declared my love aloud from the crowd.

'LOVE YOU DEAR! I said in a firm voice
as I said before many times in her ears
but it made all the difference in my choice
and the day still disturbs even after years.

She stood bowed in the midst of the crowd
then stared at me as if I did the worst
and turned her face for she was too proud
to admit her love even it's going to burst.

My heart floats on the sky as a broken kite
but let mine not to be a dark cloud forever
that hinders the moon from spreading light
but can any cloud hide the moon forever?

I said! still dare! but what use if you're alone
loneliness feeds me like fire burns the wood
for thoughts make me sleepless and forlorn
yet I long for a tight sleep as in my childhood.

Oh gifted sleep! come as a gentle woman
and take me into your beautiful heaven
Oh sweet memories! here lies your man
come let's fall in love in the hour of eleven.

The Destroyer

Oh! stop for a while
and drop a little tear
for it is not a flower
but a victim of power.

Its leaves are torn
thorns are broken
and it is not a flower
but a group of petals.

Whose brutal hands
fell it down?
Whose pitiless boots
made it brown?

Show your hands
check your boots
Alas! bow your head
and wash the stain.

Or hide in the bush
for none can wash
the hands but you
Man ,the destroyer.
